Hiring Tim Brewster was a mistake

You have to wonder what was Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi was thinking in hiring Tim Brewster to coach the Gophers in January. He never had coaching experience at all. He never was a coordinator. He was a recruiter to Mack Brown at North Carolina and Texas. Obviously, Maturi is banking on Brewster’s charm to get the hometown kids and great players from other states to go to the University of Minnesota.

This is all well and good, but it won’t matter much if the team is not winning. The Gophers are having a season to forget. They are 1- 6 overall for the season and they are 0-4 in conference play.

They are not only a bad team, but they are horrible to watch. Seriously, come up with an exciting moment this season.

There are many things that are wrong about Brewster so far this season.

For one thing, his teams come off unprepared to start the game. The Gophers often are behind in the first quarter. Teams start scoring at will against them.

Second of all, when does his team make adjustment in the second half. They run the same play all the time. They are so predictable.

Finally, the decision making by Brewster leaves a lot to be desired. He actually went for two so that the Gophers would beat Northwestern in overtime. This offense is not that good enough to take risks like that. As bad as their defense is, they were better off keeping the game going and than going for the win. At least if the game was tied, they can get to another overtime and then get an opportunity to win. It is much better than leaving the field as losers.

Talk all you want about how Brewster has a horrible team, but his predecessor, Glen Mason, would not have his team play bad every week. Mason’s teams were frustrating to watch, but at least they were interesting enough to make Gophers fans watch even if they disappoint. They may have won at least 4 games now under him.
This is not to say that Mason is missed. He had to go because he was not going to take the the playoffs.

You just wonder why the Gophers went for a coach that was more of a salesman than being a good coach on Saturdays, which was why Mason was fired.

Brewster so far has not cut it and you just wonder if he ever will.
